Where are they now? - 2KCBWDAY4

Write about the fate of a past knitting project. Whether it be something that you crocheted or knitted for yourself or to give to another person. An item that lives with you or something which you sent off to charity.

Last year I wrote about an item that has held up really well to lots of wear. Today, I'll talk about something that hasn't held up quite so well.

I finished my unicorn barf Skew socks in June 2010, in the heat of summer. As such, they didn't get much wear right away.

Skew, as of summer 2010

I've worn them a bit this past winter, but they look much worse than they should.

Skew, now

The yarn has fuzzed and faded considerably. The fading is probably my own fault. I dyed the yarn with easter egg dyes - it was my first time handpainting, and maybe the dye didn't set properly in the microwave. The yarn I used was Elann Sock It To Me 4 Ply.

I also dyed some of this yarn neon green, but I'm a bit afraid to use it for socks if it's going to wear this badly. Knitting is a constant learning experience, and I know what not to do for next time.

  1. Your socks still look pretty anyway! I have some yarn that I dyed with Kool Aid, I haven't worked with it yet but I hope it won't lose the color (I used oven instead of microwave).

    Happy knitting and blogging,

  3. Unicorn barf *chuckles* much prettier than clown barf ;) And even though they've faded, they still look really cute.

  4. hmm...i recently experimented with easter egg dyes, too. i'll have to use the yarn for something that doesn't need much washing.

the socks are still quite nice, though, even with the fading.

  6. I agree, the socks are still nice even with the fading. Also, it looks like the yarn itself is holding up pretty well, they all are going to fuzz a little, I think.

  7. I'm always skeptical about the heat of water in the microwave, since it can't actually get to that boiling point. I do my dyeing HOT. I think the colors still look great though.

Invest in one of those tiny sweater shavers. I have a small battery powered one that I got from Joann's for like, $10. Best $10 I spent in a while!

  8. They're faded and a bit fuzzy but you wear them so often which shows them how much you love them :O). I think of magical rainbows with unicorns with manes of striped hair in those colors.

  9. They look like totally different socks...but if you like pastels, no problem!

  10. Sometimes knowing what not to do is just as important as knowing what to do. (feeling strangely like Mr Miyagi)

  11. What a terrible pity! I'm an equal opportunity when it comes to pastels/brights, but fading is so sad! As is fuzzification (that's the technical term). Then again, you could also call the whole effect well-loved-iness, which has a much more positive ring.

  13. They may have faded, but that just means they're well-loved, right? :)
